8mm Film

Regular 8 film - Super 8 film

filmWe clean your film using Edwal film cleaner and a lint free cloth. If there are loose splices or breaks, we repair those for an extra $1.00 per splice or break. We use a RetroScan Universal (RetroScan) telecine device that is state of the art and is used by many well-known companies.  Capture is done at 4MP and we finish with digital color correction for rich and vibrant images using Adobe Premiere.

Do you want to add captions to the video?  Do you want to cut out scenes in the video?  Are you unsure of the content of the films or tapes and may need to rearrange the order of them?  For all these issues we can help you out - After the material is scanned into a video format, we can take that video and add a running counter on the video.  This counter will show on the screen in the bottom left.  We will give you access to the video via Youtube so you get a chance to review and watch with the counter running, and when you see a change (adding a caption, cutting a scene, switching reels around) you can reference the running counter to give the exact time in the video to make a change and email us those changes.  There are many times that customers do not know what is on the 8mm reels as they have no access to a device to play back the original film.
Having the capability to review the video before the finished product is done is a nice option - currently we are charging $3 per video to post the video with the counter on YouTube.

To finish the project, we then record your video to DVD, adding a title menu and adding chapter breaks within the playback whenever the scenes change. We use the DVD format DVD-R which is the most widely used format in DVD players. Archival quality DVD's are rated to last up to 100 years. You will receive your DVD in a slim DVD case that has a printed color cover.

If a DVD is not what you want, there are also numerous other storage options to save your newly recorded videos. One of the options we have done a lot of is saving the footage in the .MP4 format.  This will compress your final project to fit on options like flash drives or the Cloud. The easier access to the recording for you, the easier it will be for you to play on devices that can play videos. Keep in mind that compression sometimes causes a degradation in quality.

We normally put 3 hours of film on a DVD. We can record up to 3.5 hours on a Double Layer DVD if necessary. Be sure to fill out the 8mm Project Pricing Form, this is very important. When gathering your film together make sure to put a sticky note on each film container indicating year and title for each scene in the film. If you do not know what is on the film we will process the film and have you examine a portion via a secure Youtube account to verify what the film is and what titles, year or other special information to include in the finished product. Print out our 8mm Project Pricing Form (this also includes a handy film sizing guide) located on our Ordering page. Fill out the form and include it with your film.

If you are dropping off your film at our home/office, see instructions on the order form you are filling out for your project on how/where to drop off.  If not, place the film along with your order form in a strong box, packed to hold your film secure. Your local Post Office has boxes that can be purchased to hold your film for shipment. Make sure to send us an email (rdmdigital@gmail.com) stating that you are sending the film.
